Lähtökohdat: Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan hammaslääkärien työhyvinvoinnin ja työolojen kehittymistä 20 vuoden aikana. Erikseen tarkastellaan terveyskeskushammaslääkärien tuloksia.

Menetelmät: Aineisto koostuu 466 hammaslääkärin kyselyvastauksista. Kyseiset hammaslääkärit osallistuivat kuuteen eri kyselyyn 2000-luvulla.

Johtopäätöksenä pitkän uran tehneiden hammaslääkäreiden työhyvinvointi on pysynyt keskimäärin vakaana.

20 years as a dentist: How have well-being at work and working conditions changed?

Background: The aim of the study is to examine the development of the work-related well-being and working conditions of dentists over a 20-year period. The results of municipal health centre dentists are analysed separately.

Methods: The data consists of responses from 466 dentists who participated in six surveys conducted in 2003, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2019, and 2023, of whom 186 (40 %) worked in health centres. The average values of the work-related well-being and working conditions of dentists were statistically compared. These average results were related to the results of all respondents in 2003 (3,256 respondents) and 2023 (1,696 respondents).

Results and Conclusions: The work well-being of dentists with long careers generally remained stable. Both work engagement and stress increased, while burnout levels remained unchanged. Among job demands, the most significant increases were in the strain associated with patients from diverse cultural backgrounds and the rising costs related to private practice. Among job resources, the greatest increases were in the ability to combine medical and technical aspects and in the perceived appreciation for dental work by patients. The overall respect for the profession and the work itself also strengthened. The development of working conditions and work well-being among health centre dentists was similar to that of the entire study group, albeit less favourable. The results were quite consistent when compared to the broader respondent groups from 2003 and 2023.
